Olympus Mons, of course!

Post  Archie on February 13th 2008, 01:25

This zone should interest many future Pioneers because of a nice landscape, shouldn't it?
Zone coordinates: (about 650km x 650km)
  • Long. [225,00E, 236.25E]
  • Lat. [11.25N, 22.50N]
  • Tabulated zone in Celestia naming rules: Level 4, TX_4_6

This is the second most famous symbol of Mars with Valles Marineris... The biggest known impact crater in the Solar System and the highest altitude on Mars also : nearly 22'000m above the medium 0-Level (equivalent to a "sea level"), corresponding to the plain around the crater. A Monster, with huge and magnificient cliff along its south-east border.

From part to part there is surely some icy surface, depending on the seasons all along the martian year. Significative densities of iron and silicon have been detected thanks to spectral analysis. Actually, there is a special interesting point of view here : it is exactly at the boundary between Tharsis high plates on East and previous giant Mars' oceans on West (outside the picture)...

If you install there, be carefull not receiving a piece of cliff on your bunker's roof! affraid

Well, I will go myself to this zone, at the entry of the channels east of Olympus Mons. So I will admire the Mons in the sunset and the channels in the sunrise Smile Here is my next precise location:
(232.93E, 16.00N)

Please feel free to join me there! I will find strange relief to be explored: it was even thought that certain ground texture (sand?) were "springs" still flowing on the channel sides ! Rolling Eyes Thus I am expecting some nice 3D Point-Of-View to be posted soon...
